Bayshore Park Project Inches Forward
The Bayshore Municipal Golf Course Par-3 in the neighborhood of the same name in Miami Beach has remained inactive for well over a decade. Five years ago, the city sought to do something about the golf course, creating a plan to convert it into a public park. After being long in the works, the plans are nearly final.
Appropriately dubbed Bayshore Park, it would be a sprawling commons spanning nearly twenty acres. Among the highlights of the park will be a lake measuring 1.6 acres complete with a bridge for pedestrians as well as viewing docks. Additional features will include a sextet of tennis courts, a dog park, a parking lot, and a playground. The lake will also serve as an area for stormwater retention.
After Bayshore Park was approved back in 2015, an environmental survey discovered the site’s soil and groundwater was contaminated with arsenic, possibly because of the site’s former use as a golf course. The firm taking care of Bayshore Park’s design suggests the use of landforms that are “golf-like” as a way to cap contaminated soil.
Miami-Dade County must accept on-site soil management environmental assessments and issue a site and stormwater system permit to Miami Beach for the Bayshore Park project to move forward.
