Exploring Transit Options to South Beach

If you were to try and take public transportation to South Beach from Miami, chances are it would likely take you twice as long get there than if you were to drive or use a ridesharing service. For years, there have been ideas about how to better improve the connection, as far back as 1988 in fact. However, nothing has come to fruition. That may all change soon.

The Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit (SMART) Plan is a study aimed at determining how to best link Miami Beach to its neighbor across the water, better known as the downtown Miami area. Countless ideas have been floating around such as a monorail system similar to what’s seen at Disney, high-wire pods, or even a light rail system which would be the first of its kind in Miami-Dade County. Another option that has been considered is expanding the MacArthur Causeway to make dedicated transit lanes. Expanding the existing Metromover has also been entertained as a possibility.

The SMART Plan’s recommendation is expected to be submitted by the fall where it will then be reviewed by Miami-Dade’s Transportation Planning Organization and either accepted or a different beach corridor transit mode will be chosen.

How would you make transportation between Miami and Miami Beach easier?

Miami Beach Seeks Your Suggestions

Have you ever stopped for a moment, scrutinized a part of the city and thought, “I can make this better and I know just what the city needs.” If you know ways to improve the city, Miami Beach wants to hear from you. The city is reaching out to residents to help with figuring out what to do with millions of dollars in government spending aimed at addressing infrastructure repairs, tackling the effects of sea level rise, and boosting the safety of the public.

If the thought piques your interest, Miami Beach will be kicking off public meetings on Thursday for residents to talk about the projects they feel the money should be put towards. During these meetings, residents will be asked to rank a series of possible projects or suggest new ones. For residents that cannot make it to these meetings concluding on June 9, there will also be the option of sharing feedback online.

For those interested, there will be a total of four meetings beginning with the one being held this Thursday followed by back to back meetings on the 21st and 22nd and the aforementioned final meeting on Saturday, June 9. Musical Events to Get You Super Bowl Ready

It’s the last week before the arrival of Super Bowl Sunday! If you can’t seem to figure out what to do with yourself before Game Day and Justin Timberlake’s halftime performance, these free or low cost events should keep you entertained as the week progresses.

Perhaps the biggest event this week is the one happening this Friday down in the Design District’s Palm Court. Eduardo Marturet of the Miami Symphony Orchestra, The Knight Foundation, and producer Emilio Estefan are joining forces to bring none other than the Wailers to Miami. In case you’re unfamiliar with them, the Wailers are the former bandmates of legendary Jamaican singer-songwriter Bob Marley. The show begins at 6 pm and though it is free to attend, RSVP is required. Make sure to arrive early as the show is practically guaranteed to be in high demand.

Continuing with the theme of music, former physicist turned folk musician Keith Johns is a local sensation and he is currently in the middle of his First Fridays residency over at the Wynwood Yard where he is supporting his album Grateful Fool released in 2016. Each month Johns is joined by a different guest. This Friday’s guest will be live looping artist Oigo.

Discover a Taste of Key West in South Beach

Will you be trying out any new eateries this holiday? If you’d like to change up the menu and discover something new, you may want to check out the new Key West by Nikki Beach on Ocean Drive. The restaurant serves a fusion of seafood skewed dishes boasting flavors from the Caribbean, Latin America, and of course, Florida. Key West by Nikki Beach is only the second restaurant of its kind to emerge, the first one located in the city of Dubai.

Diners at Key West by Nikki Beach will find a host of fish selections to try, from Alaskan king crab legs to octopus, ceviche, snapper wrapped in banana leaf, and more. As for the drinks, they are inspired by a famous name in 20th-century fiction: American novelist and Key West resident Ernest Hemingway. The appropriately citrus-centric cocktails can be enjoyed at just about any time of day including the restaurant’s nightly Happy Hour.

Key West by Nikki Beach is owned by Jack Penrod, a native of the Florida Keys. Besides bringing the Keys to South Beach, the restaurant is also working with local Key West artists to sell their artwork. These funds are being donated to the Key West High School’s culinary department, which has provided lunch to victims of this year’s Hurricane Irma.

Key West by Nikki Beach is open Monday to Thursday from 5 pm to midnight and Friday and Saturday until 1 am.

The South Beach Seafood Festival Has Arrived

Many of us look forward to the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, but like most things, it only comes once a year. Thankfully, another food-themed event is kicking off this week, except this one carries more of an aquatic theme of sorts. In case you haven’t heard, the South Beach Seafood Festival is in full swing and it will be sticking around for the rest of the week.

The South Beach Seafood Festival brings together some of South Florida’s finest culinary wizards and acclaimed chefs participating in an enticingly distinct assortment of events. Visitors will be able to explore over three blocks of great seafood and partake in experiences along with fellow “seafoodies”, over 10,000 of them in fact. Just about anything you can imagine a seafood festival should have will be included. Visit one of the pop-up cafes, pair your favorite aquatic bite with a corresponding wine, have a drink at the open bar. For the little ones and those young at heart, there are games and lots of fun to be had. If you just want to enjoy the ambiance and try something different, you can always check out the live music.

Tickets for the South Beach Seafood Festival are selling out fast. Don’t miss this exciting event!

Free Food and Wi-Fi in South Florida

Hurricane Irma has come and gone, but there are still numerous South Florida residents dealing with having no electricity. This means that for many, there is no way to prepare a hot meal or enjoy a cold drink during these hot summer days. If you’re among the many still without power, JetBlue is making life a little easier today.

If you’re willing to make the drive over to the BB&T Center in the city of Sunrise, the airline is sponsoring a complimentary food truck initiative today. More than fifteen distinct food trucks will be offering South Florida residents some great food including names like Gallos Pintos, 90 Miles to Go, King of Racks BBQ, and plenty more. The event has already begun and will continue until 2 pm. It will resume at 4 pm before ending at 7 pm. Anyone who is in need of a hot meal is welcome to visit.

For those unable to communicate using their phones due to reasons such as a dead battery, several restaurants throughout Miami are also providing customers complimentary Wi-Fi or free phone charging. Some of these restaurants include The Arketekt by Aficionados on Brickell Bay Drive, Cheeseburger Baby in Miami Beach, Fritz & Franz Bierhaus in Coral Gables, and more.
