An Update on the Sands of Miami Beach

Jacksonville recently made headlines for reopening some of its beaches despite the orders to quarantine and practice social distancing. For those concerned about Miami Beach following suit, the mayor of the city is telling people it won’t be anytime soon.

Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber recently stated that the city’s beaches likely won’t reopen before the beginning of June, citing the complications involved in trying to restrict non-Miami Beach residents from heading to the city’s famous beaches. Furthermore, it is not legal for the city to open the beaches solely to those that live there.

A task force from across Florida will soon meet to discuss how to go about re-opening the state in phases. The task force is being requested to make recommendations to Governor Ron DeSantis on a short-term plan to re-open Florida, which may or may not include beaches, by the end of this week. The mayor of Miami-Dade also recently organized a virtual town hall to formulate a plan for reopening.

Should Miami Beach open certain spots, there will likely be restrictions in place. For example, workout areas that involve lots of touching or tot lots would remain closed. There would also be limitations on team sports activities where social distancing is not feasible.

Popular Miami Beach Restaurants Offer Takeout

Being under quarantine means you probably have a lot of time on your hands. If you don’t feel like cooking, however, there is the option of takeout or delivery. How do you know which restaurants are offering these options? Let’s highlight a few of them.

Lucali on Bay Road has earned fame for its great pizza and is notorious for its lengthy wait time. If you have yet to try its Neapolitan pie, now is the time to do so without having to deal with the famously long wait times.

Over on Alton Road, the Italian-themed Macchialina is well-known for its fantastic pasta and tasty appetizers. Try the Caesar broccolini and whipped ricotta or order one of the pasta kits that you can prepare at home. Don’t forget to pair the food with some wine.

Finding a table at Stubborn Seed on Washington Avenue is often easier said than done. With its takeout options, you can dine at home and enjoy its dishes like the wagyu filet, crunchy truffle potatoes, and more.

The classic Miami Beach mainstay Joe’s Stone Crab offers daily takeout at its next door eatery, offering food choices like hash browns, stone crab, creamed spinach, and its highly-acclaimed key lime pie.

Stay Safe When You Go Shopping in Miami Beach

Will you be doing any shopping in Miami Beach? If so, wearing a mask to protect yourself from COVID-19 will no longer be an option. The city is issuing an order requiring all employees as well as customers to wear some type of cover when they step into a grocery store, a pharmacy, or a restaurant. The order also applies to those that are doing delivery for drugstores, for example.

It’s worth noting that the definition of what constitutes a “mask” is somewhat loose in regards to the order. You can choose to wear a typical face mask but if that is not an option, you can also go with something such as a bandana, handkerchief, or even a scarf provided that they cover your nose and your mouth. These masks are not intended as a substitute for doing some of the other effective ways of protecting yourself from COVID-19: social distancing and frequently washing your hands.

If you live in Miami Beach, how are you going about protecting yourself? Remember that unless there is a true need to go out such as to buy household essentials or to walk your pet so it can do its needs, it is best to remain indoors.

Jazid Is Ready for a Comeback

Due to the spread of a certain notorious virus, nightclubs in Miami Beach have been closed for the time being. After the virus has come and gone, though, you can expect to see a potentially recognizable face among the many clubs welcoming guests to party on the beach.

Have you ever heard of Jazid? Situated on Washington Avenue, the live music club gained quite the status prior to shutting down in 2017. During its heyday, many major names in music performed at the club, including the late legendary musician Prince, best selling Latin singer and actor Ricky Martin, Colombian singer, songwriter, and producer Shakira, and many more.

Jazid now has a brand new owner plus a new creative director spearheading its comeback. The refreshed Jazid is remembering its rich past while introducing fresh changes for 2020. The downstairs bar is now a visual tour de force showcasing 70s and Renaissance era styles while the upstairs social club has comfy couches in teal and crystal chandeliers. Future Jazid guests are welcome to dance on top of the furniture if they wish.

The new Jazid will open its doors at 1342 Washington Avenue. Its operating hours will be Wednesdays through Sundays from 6 pm until late night.

What Does the Future Hold for You at Spellbound?

Explore the Fairwind Hotel on Collins Avenue and you’ll eventually come upon a surprise that’s a refreshing change of pace from the norm. Unlike the typical bar experience in Miami Beach, the speakeasy known as Spellbound doesn’t have an alfresco area to get some sun while you drink nor does it have massive windows overlooking the city.

Spellbound is a different experience, emanating a mysterious dark ambiance while offering plenty of drink options and drinking aficionados. In keeping with its unique, mystical identity, guests are given Tarot card menus. You’ll notice a wide assortment of drinks by its mixologist David Velasquez, all of which are crafted by hand. Should you visit between the hours of midnight to 2 am you can participate in the Witching Hour and sip on cocktails for $7, wine for $5, and beer for just $4.

To find Spellbound, you’ll need to do a little digging. Check out the side of the Fairwind Hotel on 10th Street and if you look hard enough, you’ll see a private entrance. Just inform the doorman you need some help and you’ll be guided over to the speakeasy to see what the future holds for you.

Spellbound is open on Thursday through Saturday from 8 pm to 2 am.

An Introductory Guide to the South Beach Wine and Food Festival

The taste buds and noses of foodies are all set to the South Beach Wine and Food Festival (SOBEWFF) kicking off next week. Despite its name, the festival extends well beyond Miami Beach into areas and cities beyond Miami-Dade County like Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. Today, it’s comprised of over 100 events.

If you do plan on attending SOBEWFF, make sure to bring along an ID and tickets to whichever event you’re attending. Some wet wipes might not hurt either so you can keep your hands and mouth clean from all of the eating you’ll be doing.

Even as SOBEWFF grows and expands with different events, at least one event has remained consistent and that’s the Grand Tasting Village. Since the beginning of SOBEWFF, over fifty restaurants have given out samples and numerous wine and spirits suppliers have provided samples with seemingly no limit in place. This year, the event is being held on 22nd through the 23rd. As one of its most well-known events, expect lines if you don’t arrive bright and early with your $200+ ticket.

As in the past, SOBEWFF will be packed with famous names, so expect to see celebrities like television personality Rachael Ray and singer Trisha Yearwood making appearances.

Owning an Iconic Piece of Miami Beach

Several things that have become synonymous with Miami Beach: South Beach, the Art Deco style, Ocean Drive, and the recognizable red and yellow lifeguard towers. If you’ve ever wanted to own an iconic piece of the barrier island, the chance presented itself last week. The city is auctioned off two of the lifeguard towers, with prices individually going for around $500 to $2,500+ a piece when they went up for sale.

In the case of these towers, they were painted to celebrate Super Bowl LIV which was held right here in South Florida. One tower has the San Francisco 49ers logo while the other one boasts the name of the Kansas City Chiefs, the Super Bowl champions.

This isn’t the first time Miami Beach has sold its lifeguard towers. It did the same thing for six of them that had been used since the 1980s, fetching well over $2,000.

While the 2020 auction for the lifeguard towers has since ended, the city is bound to auction off more of the towers to make way for newer ones. Do keep in mind, however, that if you were to become the winning bidder, it is your responsibility to lug the tower(s) to wherever it is they’ll ultimately be going.

Getting Around Miami Beach During Super Bowl LIV

Though Miami Beach isn’t hosting Super Bowl LIV, the barrier island is bustling with activity thanks to the Super Bowl Experience being held at the Miami Beach Convention Center and other events like the eagerly anticipated Gronk Beach. To deal with the crowds, there are several streets that will be closed or are already closed.

You may have noticed the street closures near the Miami Beach Convention Center already that are closed to through traffic, like 18 Street to Dade Boulevard for instance. Many of these streets will close until February 5th, so it’s something to keep in mind if you frequently travel through that area.

Several streets around the Faena Forum are expected to close like 34 Street from Indian Creek Drive to Collins Avenue. Ocean Drive will also see closures. In fact, starting this Friday, it will be closed to all vehicular traffic so that pedestrians can roam safely. The popular thoroughfare will reopen on Monday, February 3rd at 7 am.

If you’re going to be spending time in Miami Beach, strongly consider using public transportation or ridesharing to ease the process of getting around. There are options like the free Miami Beach trolley that operates six days a week from 6 am to midnight.
