Have Some Great Sushi in Miami Beach

It’s
not for everyone, but there are plenty of people out there that can appreciate
a nice plate of raw fish, better known by its name of sushi. Of course, an area
as cosmopolitan as South Florida has plenty of different, excellent sushi spots
to try, and we’re here to highlight a few of them.

Let’s
begin right here in Miami Beach. Nobu Miami may seem large yet the vibe remains
intimate. The list of different, curated nigiri is surprisingly large and if
you want, you can even let the Nobu chef figure out a great dinner for you for
a price.

Sushi
by Bou on Ocean Drive is located in Casa Casuarina, the former home of the late
fashion designer Gianni Versace. The sushi bar has just four seats, so getting
a reservation here is easier said than done. However, in return, you’re in for
an unforgettable omakase dining experience.

In
North Miami Beach is Yakko-San on 163rd Street. This has become a
popular spot for late night dining (it closes at 3 am) and it includes a
variety of options like crispy bok choy as an appetizer or hamachi tataki
jalapeño rolls comprised of ingredients like cucumber, avocado, and more.

Miami Music Week is in full swing and there is absolutely no shortage of places welcoming South Floridians looking to party it up and enjoy some great tunes in the wonderful weather. Let’s explore a few notable parties happening this week throughout the barrier island and beyond.

Tomorrow, LIV will welcome several notable names to the venue, including Grammy-winning DJ Cedric Gervais. Popular DJ Tiesto is expected to perform the next day while acclaimed French DJ David Guetta plans to drop by on Saturday.

Have you checked out Miami Beach’s Basement yet? Found in the downstairs area of the Edition Miami Beach, the club’s Miami Music Week celebrations begin on Wednesday, with musical acts like Pete Tong, Tony Touch, and Nicky Elisabeth making appearances and spinning tunes. The celebration will continue until Sunday with the Disco Funk & Soul Event presented by Carl Cox.

On Thursday, Wynwood Factory is hosting the Los Angeles-based party outfit Brownies & Lemonade which is bringing some notable guests to what is now one of Miami’s largest party settings. Expect to see American record producer and DJ Skrillex plus many more.

South Beach’s Under the Radar Hotspot

Pitbull’s iLov305 may be one of the hottest places to hang out on the beach these days, but there is another hotspot that’s quietly gaining attention. Dubbed Sophie’s, this venue has been attracting all of the cool kids to the beach ever since it opened its doors late last year during the Art Basel festivities.

Sophie’s is located in the former home of Radio Bar and is a project by Philippe “Flip” Falca, the man behind Urbanica, a boutique hotel also located in South Beach. As for the ambiance, Sophie’s emphasizes an intimate, “sexy” vibe. In fact, the venue can only accommodate a total of 180 people. The ambiance is further complemented by interior details like tabletops in black marble, tastefully abstract nude caricatures, and even couches outfitted in pink velvet.

The word of mouth around Sophie’s has remained positive since its Art Basel opening, attracting art aficionados, as well as tourists, look for something edgier in Miami Beach’s trendy “SoBe” area. The music focuses on some of Miami’s lesser-known DJs like Patrick Walsh and Freckles which perform during Sophie’s so-called “Danse” parties. These Danse parties are free to attend until the venue reaches its capacity.

Should you wish to check out Sophie’s, its address is 814 First Street and it is open Thursday through Sunday from 6 pm to 5 am.

Upcoming Spring Dining

Miami Beach is definitely one of those cities where there is absolutely no shortage of different places to eat. No matter what your palate might be, there is bound to be a place for you. With the official start of the spring season just a few days away, some new eateries are on the horizon that may become the hottest new place to grab a bite.

We’ll begin right here in Miami Beach with Pubblica Italiana and Dalia, located in what was once known as Ocean Drive’s Park Central Hotel. Once the building re-emerges as the newly named Celino South Beach Hotel, it will feature the two aforementioned restaurants. As the name implies, Pubblica Italiana will have Italian cuisine while Dalia will skew towards Mediterranean-inspired dishes.

Tentatively opening next month on Drexel Avenue is the 17,000 square foot Time Out Market Miami. It will be first Time Out Market in the United States and it will feature over fifteen different eateries spearheaded by some major culinary bigwigs like Jeremy Ford, Norman Van Aken, and Michael Beltran.

Over in the Brickell area, Osaka is opening this month on Brickell Bay Drive. Already boasting nine locations across South America, this will be the first Osaka location in all of North America. The cuisine is a unique fusion of Japanese and Peruvian.

The Gale Hotel on Collins Avenue will be hosting a party on its rooftop. For $139 you’ll enjoy an open bar available for five hours plus an extravagant dinner buffet. As you’re enjoying the food and drink, DJ JASE will be spinning tunes as the sky illuminates with the display of fireworks.

Miami Beach Cracks Down on Short Term Rentals

miamibeachaerial

Do you have any plans to rent your condo on popular short term rental services like Airbnb? If so, the city of Miami Beach would like to have a word with you. City laws allow residents to rent out their properties on a short term basis in specific areas around the city, with the exception of single family homes which cannot participate regardless of where they’re located.

Miami Beach has been actively taking control of stopping illegal rentals, in some cases fining violators as much as $20,000 per violation. Residents have often complained that services like Airbnb result in an increased level of noise due to noisy renters. The hotel industry has also taken issue with the fact that hosts are not forced to pay local resort taxes, resulting in unfair competition.

City commissioners recently voted to make regulations on short term rentals stricter. Any homeowner that wishes to advertise their unit on a service like Airbnb must submit an affidavit to the city that affirms their property is located within in area that has been approved for renting on a short term basis. They must also obtain a resort tax account as well as a business tax receipt. Furthermore, the homeowner will be required to show proof that their association allows short term rentals. The fines for a violation will be at least $1,000.

New Yorkers Love Miami

nymb

Here’s a fun, if perhaps not all that surprising fact: New Yorkers love Miami Beach. In fact, Miami takes the top spot when it comes to preferred travel destinations among New Yorkers during the holiday season. Considering how frigid the temperatures can dip in New York, it’s no surprise the cooler climate of the Magic City remains a top favorite.

This holiday season, close to twenty percent of New Yorkers will be spending the holidays in the 305 and neighboring cities like Miami Beach. With temperatures generally hovering near the mid to upper seventies lately, the weather is perfect for spending a day enjoying the ocean breeze, doing some shopping on Lincoln Road, checking out Art Basel, or having an al fresco meal on Ocean Drive.

While Miami came in at number one, it wasn’t the only city in Florida to earn a spot among the preferred holiday travel destinations by New York residents. Orlando also made the list, probably due to the climate and its many theme parks like Walt Disney World and Universal Studios.

What are some of your favorite cities to visit during the holidays? Do you like to stay in sunny South Florida or do you prefer to visit a city with more of a winter vibe?

commonwealthmiami

Commonwealth Miami is a “modern” speakeasy that fuses a restaurant and bar. Patrons will find over 100 unique types of scotches, whiskey, and bourbon as well as more than fifty unique beer varieties, both on tap and bottled.

Commonwealth Miami is 2,300 square feet in size and is located right on Washington Avenue in Miami Beach.
