South Florida Events Happening in April

April may not seem like there is much going on, yet a lot of under the radar events are happening in South Florida, including many that are near Miami Beach! Let’s explore some of these events you may wish to attend.

For opera fans, “Opera Italiana is in the Air” is a celebration of this art form that stages complimentary outdoors concerts. The event is happening for the first time on the 13th in Miami featuring an al fresco performance being held at Regatta Park. The orchestra consisting of local Miami musicians is being conducted by maestro Alvise Casellati and it will showcase classic pieces from works such as Puccini’s “Tosca” and Verdi’s “Rigoletto”.

The last name Marley is one that commands a deep level of respect in the music industry. Three of legendary reggae singer-songwriter Bob Marley’s children will be making an appearance at Kaya Fest this year at Bayfront Park. Festival creator Stephen Marley, Julian Marley, Ziggy Marley, as well as several of Bob Marley’s grandchildren will be in attendance on the 20th. Other musical acts such as “Mr. 305” Pitbull and rapper Busta Rhymes are also expected to show up.

From the 26 through the 28th, the World Polo League Beach Polo is returning to Miami Beach.

South Beach’s Fantastic Hotels

When it comes to hotels, few places in the country are held in such high regard as the hotels of South Beach. With the prime location by the beach and nearness to all of the hotspots including Ocean Drive, staying in a “SoBe” hotel is a memorable experience. Let’s take a look at a few of the highlights.

One of the largest hotels in South Beach is 1 Hotel South Beach. While it’s developed a reputation for its rooms, its environmentally friendly aesthetic is a major selling point. The hotel is accented in salvaged driftwood while the juices in the lobby shop are cold-pressed. The hotel also boasts a quartet of pools, a rooftop bar, and classes centered around yoga and meditation.

SLS South Beach is known for also being the home of Hyde Beach, a popular club. Also at SLS is The Bazaar by Jose Andres located in the patio area. If the Spanish menu doesn’t interest you, maybe the food at Katsuya will, which consists of sushi.

The W South Beach made strong waves when it opened its doors in 2009. Its loft-style rooms and staggered balconies allow everyone an ocean view while its famous Whatever/Whenever service allows guests the flexibility to order virtually any type of service at just about any time of day.

South Beach’s Under the Radar Hotspot

Pitbull’s iLov305 may be one of the hottest places to hang out on the beach these days, but there is another hotspot that’s quietly gaining attention. Dubbed Sophie’s, this venue has been attracting all of the cool kids to the beach ever since it opened its doors late last year during the Art Basel festivities.

Sophie’s is located in the former home of Radio Bar and is a project by Philippe “Flip” Falca, the man behind Urbanica, a boutique hotel also located in South Beach. As for the ambiance, Sophie’s emphasizes an intimate, “sexy” vibe. In fact, the venue can only accommodate a total of 180 people. The ambiance is further complemented by interior details like tabletops in black marble, tastefully abstract nude caricatures, and even couches outfitted in pink velvet.

The word of mouth around Sophie’s has remained positive since its Art Basel opening, attracting art aficionados, as well as tourists, look for something edgier in Miami Beach’s trendy “SoBe” area. The music focuses on some of Miami’s lesser-known DJs like Patrick Walsh and Freckles which perform during Sophie’s so-called “Danse” parties. These Danse parties are free to attend until the venue reaches its capacity.

Should you wish to check out Sophie’s, its address is 814 First Street and it is open Thursday through Sunday from 6 pm to 5 am.

Enjoy a Taste of France in Miami Beach

Happy Valentine’s Day! When it comes to romance, there is arguably no place on earth that is more romantic than Paris, France. With that in mind, if you’re looking for French cuisine in Miami Beach, there are a few places you may wish to consider.

La Sandwicherie in the Flamingo Lummus area is a perfect spot to grab small bites such as smoothies, juice, and of course, sandwiches. It is so popular in fact, that it currently has a rating of nearly five stars on Yelp out of more than 2,300 reviews. La Sandwicherie’s address is 229 14th Street.

Also in the Flamingo Lummus area is the curiously named Otentic Fresh Food Restaurant. Some of its most popular dishes include the roasted chicken, Steak Maurice, the filet mignon, and the Otentic Pasta. Much like La Sandwicherie, it also has a rating of more than four stars on Yelp. The address is 538 Washington Avenue.

Over on Espanola Way is A La Folie Cafe, another French spot that also offers some top-rated crepes. If you’re looking for something away from the typical bustle of Miami Beach, it’s a great place to visit, with a vast menu of food to choose from. The cafe’s address is 516 Espanola Way.

Exploring Transit Options to South Beach

If you were to try and take public transportation to South Beach from Miami, chances are it would likely take you twice as long get there than if you were to drive or use a ridesharing service. For years, there have been ideas about how to better improve the connection, as far back as 1988 in fact. However, nothing has come to fruition. That may all change soon.

The Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit (SMART) Plan is a study aimed at determining how to best link Miami Beach to its neighbor across the water, better known as the downtown Miami area. Countless ideas have been floating around such as a monorail system similar to what’s seen at Disney, high-wire pods, or even a light rail system which would be the first of its kind in Miami-Dade County. Another option that has been considered is expanding the MacArthur Causeway to make dedicated transit lanes. Expanding the existing Metromover has also been entertained as a possibility.

The SMART Plan’s recommendation is expected to be submitted by the fall where it will then be reviewed by Miami-Dade’s Transportation Planning Organization and either accepted or a different beach corridor transit mode will be chosen.

How would you make transportation between Miami and Miami Beach easier?

“Hamilton” Is Coming to Miami

Do you consider yourself a Broadway fan? If so, you may have seen or at least heard about “Hamilton”. The musical by actor, composer, singer, lyricist, and playwright Lin-Manuel Miranda has earned massive critical praise, massive box office, and remains one of the most popular Broadway shows.

If you missed out on seeing “Hamilton” when it recently made its debut at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, there will be another opportunity for Miami Beach residents who’d rather not drive so far up north. You’ll have to wait another year, but “Hamilton” is coming to none other than the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts beginning on February 18, 2020 through March 15! If the New York performance served as any indication, you can be almost certain that tickets for the show are going to sell out quickly. A way to guarantee your chance to see the show is to sign up for season subscription.

“Hamilton” tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, also known as one of the American Founding Fathers. His life is presented through the use of various musical genres including hip hop, show tunes, pop, R&B, and more. Additionally, the show became known for casting non-white actors as the Founding Fathers and other historical figures.

Stay Fit in Miami Beach

We’re already approaching the January, have you stuck to your New Year’s resolutions to exercise? With its many outdoor spaces, Miami Beach has plenty of spots to keep fit. For those that prefer the enclosed space of a gym, there are several in the city that stand out above the others, assuming you aren’t already taking advantage of the Murano Grande’s included fitness center.

Flywheel Sports over on Purdy Avenue focuses on group fitness versus going solo. Its precision training classes are aimed at tackling individual muscle groups while the stadium cycling adds a twist to the familiar cycling experience.

On 20th Street is the singularly and appropriately named Anatomy. The five-star Yelp rated fitness facility has a massive selection of classes to participate in plus lots of different amenities and services including yoga, Pilates, and cardio boxing, to name a few. There is also a vitamin lounge, an “infrared” sauna, an on-site chiropractor, facials, and so much more.

Speaking of boxing, Washington Avenue’s South Beach Boxing has been offering top-rated classes centered around Muay Thai and kickboxing for over two decades and counting. Local residents can try their first class at no charge and even kids can take advantage of the classes centered around anti-bullying.

Eat Healthier in 2019

It’s a new year with over 300 days to make changes, resolutions, and live a better life. Perhaps you’ve thought about eating healthier. If that’s the case, these restaurants will still allow you to enjoy a night or afternoon out while sticking to your new dietary goals.

For great food and great views, consider visiting Juvia on Lincoln Road. The cuisine consists of dishes with a Peruvian, Japanese, and French twist, and there are plenty of options to choose from. The vegetable tiradito, for example, has coconut, beets, and zucchini and there is no oil involved. It’s also topped with a dash of lime plus dry miso.

Azabu Miami Beach on Ocean Drive is so excellent, it’s been Michelin starred. Originally debuting in New York, you may wish to try dishes like the sesame powder accompanied fluke carpaccio or perhaps the grilled avocado.

Just southwest of Azabu is one that we mentioned several times last year: Planta South Beach. This vegan-friendly establishment on Commerce Street offers meals like the gluten-free Thai noodle salad or the Plant burger.

The similarly named Plant Miami in Wynwood is a “luxe vegan” and raw restaurant where you can try dishes like coconut corn soup, summer squash lasagne, plus desserts like the avocado lime tart.

Free Post Art Basel Events to Enjoy

Art Basel has come and gone, but there are still plenty of local events to check out this week if you’re already having artistic withdrawals. Best of all, these events will cost you little to nothing to enjoy and attend. Let’s get started.

Singer and fire dancer Megan Morrison has developed a loyal following for showcasing her talents as the frontwoman for bands like Dorothy’s Surrender. The multi-talented woman is now going solo with a new project appropriately called Morrison and she’ll be performing her work on Tuesday night at Ricky’s South Beach.

On Saturday, the New World Center in Miami Beach is presenting its Sounds of the Season event featuring classics like Tchaikovsky’s classic The Nutcracker Suite, Sleigh Ride by Leroy Anderson, and many more. If you can’t make it there before showtime at 7:30 pm, you can always enjoy the gargantuan WallCast along with other spectators.

Speaking of the holidays, Gramps over in Miami is also getting into the holiday spirit with its Jazzy Holidaze celebration where musical acts like Poparazzi, Butterfly Snapple, and Foom! will perform. The party kicks off on Friday at 7:30 pm.
